How to Choose a Wall Sconce for Your Bedroom
Bedside wall sconces are one of the most impactful upgrades you can make to a bedroom — and one of the most commonly done wrong. Too high, too bright, wrong style, wrong shade direction. Small mistakes that make a big difference. This guide covers everything you need to get it right the first time.
Why wall sconces beat bedside lamps
A bedside table lamp is the default choice. A wall sconce is the considered one.
Wall sconces free up your nightstand completely — no base, no cord snaking across the surface, just space for the things that actually belong there. The light position is better too. A wall-mounted sconce at the right height puts light exactly where you need it for reading, without the glare that comes from a lamp sitting below eye level.
And from a design perspective, a pair of matching sconces flanking a bed has a boutique hotel quality that table lamps rarely achieve. They feel intentional in a way that a lamp on a nightstand simply doesn't.
The right height
Height is the most common mistake people make. Too high and you're reading by a light that shines directly into your eyes. Too low and it doesn't spread enough light across your book or screen.
The rule: mount your bedroom wall sconce so the centre of the shade sits approximately 150–165cm (59–65 inches) from the floor — roughly at shoulder height when sitting up in bed.
The best way to find your exact height: sit in bed in your normal reading position and ask someone to hold the sconce at different points on the wall until the light feels right. Mark that spot, then mount.
Shade direction — up, down, or diffused?
The direction your sconce casts its light changes everything about how a bedroom feels.
Downward shade directs light toward the bed — focused and practical, best for reading. Creates a pool of light rather than filling the whole room.
Upward shade bounces light off the ceiling for a soft ambient glow. Not ideal for reading but creates a beautiful, relaxed atmosphere when you want the room to feel calm rather than functional.
Up and down gives you both — some task light, some ambient fill. Versatile and works well in most bedrooms.
Diffused through shade is where natural stone and marble sconces come into their own. Rather than directing a beam, light passes through the stone itself — the result is a warm, organic luminosity that no manufactured material can replicate.
Our Lumo Wabi-Sabi Travertine Stone Wall Lamp ($189) is the best example of this in our collection — the travertine glows from within when lit, revealing its natural veining and creating exactly the kind of warm, spa-like atmosphere a bedroom deserves. For something with more drama, the Velaris Split Alabaster Wall Sconce ($739) takes the same principle and elevates it into a genuine statement piece.
Wattage and colour temperature
Bedroom lighting should always be warm and gentle. This is not a style preference — it's biology. Blue-toned light above 3500K suppresses melatonin and makes it harder to fall asleep. In bedrooms, always use warm white: 2700K to 3000K.
For wattage, aim for the equivalent of 40–60W for reading — enough to see clearly without it feeling clinical. Most LED equivalents in the 5–8W range hit this comfortably.
If possible, choose a dimmable sconce and pair it with a dimmable LED bulb. Being able to dial the light down to 20% in the hour before sleep makes a genuine difference to how quickly you wind down.
Choosing the right style
Natural stone and marble — The Nero Marble Orbit Wall Sconce ($279) quietly elegant with a circular form that sits beautifully beside a bed without competing with the rest of the room. For something more architectural, Valdoro Marble Wall Lamp ($519) has a sculptural quality that makes it a focal point in its own right.
Travertine — warmer and more textured than marble, with a natural porous quality that makes each piece genuinely unique. The Black Aurelian Travertine Wall Lamp ($289) brings a slightly bolder aesthetic — the dark frame against the natural stone is striking beside a bed. The Travira Luna Adjustable Travertine Wall Lamp ($309) adds the practical advantage of adjustability — you can reposition the shade direction to suit reading or mood lighting.
Swing-arm — if you want full flexibility, a swing-arm sconce lets you pull the light close when reading and push it away when you want ambient only. The White Rizzatto Swing Arm Wall Light ($329) is our most practical bedroom sconce — clean lines, fully adjustable arm, and a shade that directs light precisely where you need it.
Fabric — classic and warm for traditional or transitional bedrooms. The Auralis Single Khaki Fabric Wall Light ($249) has a muted, earthy tone that works beautifully in neutral bedroom palettes.
Single sconce or a pair?
In most bedrooms, a pair of matching sconces — one on each side of the bed — is the right choice. It creates balance, means both people have their own light, and looks more intentional than one sconce offset to a single side.
Space each sconce roughly 15–30cm from the edge of the bed, at 150–165cm from the floor. They should feel connected to the bed — not floating independently on the wall.
A single sconce works when the bed is against a wall with only one accessible side, or when you're deliberately creating an asymmetric, more casual look.
Hardwired vs plug-in
Hardwired sconces are cleaner — no visible cable — and feel more permanent. They require an electrician and are best planned during a renovation or when you're confident about placement.
Plug-in sconces are more flexible and can be installed yourself in an afternoon. Run the cable straight down the wall to a socket hidden behind the nightstand, or use a cable cover for a cleaner finish. If you're renting or not ready to commit to a fixed position, start with plug-in.
The short version
Mount at 150–165cm from the floor. Use warm white light (2700–3000K). Choose a diffused stone or marble shade if you want atmosphere, a swing-arm if you want practicality, or a pair of matching sconces if you want the bedroom to look genuinely designed.
