A pendant light can bring a kitchen or dining room together. But before choosing a finish or falling in love with a particular shape, there’s one detail worth getting right: size.
Too small, and the light can feel disconnected from the furniture below. Too large, and it may overwhelm the space or interrupt the view across the room.
The right balance starts with a few measurements. Here’s how to choose pendant lighting for your kitchen island or dining table, with Baskoraa designs to help you picture the possibilities.
Start With the Surface Below
When comparing pendant lights, begin with the dimensions of your table or island.
Measure its length and width, then note the ceiling height and the distance between the ceiling and the surface. These measurements will help you compare the fixture’s size and the suspension length you need.
Think about how you use the space, too. A kitchen island might accommodate food preparation, family breakfasts and evening drinks. A dining table may need lighting that feels comfortable during a long meal.
The pendant should suit both the proportions and the purpose of the space.
What Size Pendant Works Above a Kitchen Island?
For a single linear pendant, around half to two-thirds of the island’s length is a useful starting point.
For example, a 240 cm island gives you an initial fixture-length range of approximately 120–160 cm. You can then refine your choice based on the pendant’s width, visual weight and the surrounding room.
| Island length | Starting range for a single linear pendant |
|---|---|
| 70.9″ / 180 cm | 35.4–47.2″ / 90–120 cm |
| 94.5″ / 240 cm | 47.2–63.0″ / 120–160 cm |
| 118.1″ / 300 cm | 59.1–78.7″ / 150–200 cm |
These are starting proportions, rather than fixed installation rules. A slender fixture and a wide, sculptural design can feel very different at the same length.

Consider the Valcera Linear Pendant Light
The Valcera Linear Pendant Light combines a slim black structure with an illuminated faux-marble resin diffuser.

Available in 39.4″, 47.2″ and 59.1″ lengths — 100, 120 and 150 cm — it offers three proportions to compare against your island or rectangular dining table.
Its narrow profile works well when you want a continuous horizontal shape without introducing several separate shades. Pair it with timber cabinetry, understated tableware and warm neutral finishes.
What Size Pendant Works Above a Dining Table?
For a single round pendant or chandelier, a useful starting diameter is around half to two-thirds of the table’s width.
Above a round table measuring 120 cm across, for example, you might begin by looking at fixtures approximately 60–80 cm in diameter.
A smaller pendant can still be a deliberate choice for a quieter, more intimate setting. Consider whether you want the light to become a statement piece or sit gently within the room.
For long rectangular tables, compare a linear pendant with a repeated arrangement of smaller lights. Browse our Chandeliers collection if you prefer a broader or more sculptural centrepiece.
Consider the Astra Linear Glass Pendant Light
The Astra Linear Glass Pendant Light introduces texture through a sequence of fluted glass shades.

Its elongated shape makes it worth considering for rectangular dining tables and kitchen islands. Choose from smoke gray, clear or milky white glass to complement the materials around it.
Astra comes in four lengths, so compare the dimensions of your chosen size with the furniture below. The glass finish also changes its visual presence: clear glass feels lighter, while smoke gray adds more definition.
Should You Choose Two Pendants or Three?
The number of pendants depends on their size and the space available.
Two wider shades can create a balanced arrangement. Three compact pendants can work across a longer surface, provided there’s comfortable separation between them.
Before deciding, mark out the actual shade widths on your countertop. Check the gaps between the shades and the space remaining at each end. Then look at the arrangement from the room’s entrance and from a seated position.
Consider the Ithaca Travertine Rounded Edge Pendant Light
The Ithaca Travertine Rounded Edge Pendant Light brings natural texture to a compact form.

Its shade measures 7.9″ in diameter × 2.8″ high — 20 × 7 cm, making it an option to explore in a repeated arrangement over an island or counter.
Natural travertine introduces variations in pores, markings and colour, giving each shade its own character. It pairs beautifully with timber, linen and earthy finishes.

How High Should Pendant Lights Hang?
A common starting point is 30–36″ / approximately 76–91 cm between the tabletop or countertop and the bottom of the fixture.
Check the proposed position while both sitting and standing. Consider sightlines, glare and the size of the shade before settling on the height.
Your installer should confirm the final position against the fixture’s instructions and the conditions in your room.
Remember that shade height, suspension-cable length and total installed drop are different measurements. Check all three when planning for a particularly high or low ceiling.
Choose a Shape That Suits the Atmosphere
Dimensions help you narrow the options. Shape and material help you decide how you want the space to feel.
A slim linear pendant can echo the lines of a long table. Fluted glass introduces detail and reflections. Natural stone adds texture, while a fabric shade can bring softness to a quieter corner.
Consider the Kumo Linen Lantern Pendant Light
The Kumo Linen Lantern Pendant Light offers a rounded, lantern-inspired silhouette with a linen shade.

It’s an option for smaller dining settings, breakfast corners or spaces where you want a gentle decorative presence. Its compact proportions create a different effect from a large statement chandelier.
Style it with pale timber, ceramics and relaxed fabrics for an inviting setting.
Think Beyond the Pendant
Your pendant is one part of the room’s lighting.
Consider how it works alongside the lighting already in place, especially where you prepare food or need a clearer view of the surface. Check the selected product’s brightness, light direction and dimming compatibility before ordering.
